How we score paving contractors in Cheltenham

This page explains how we score the 35 paving contractor businesses listed in the Cheltenham Paving Contractor Guide. The method is the same for every business on the site, whether it's paid for a placement or not, and it runs on public review data rather than opinion.

The five signals, and what each one is worth

Every listing gets a composite score out of 100, built from five measured signals. We list them here from heaviest to lightest weight.

  • Sentiment, 28%. A synthesis of what recent reviews actually say: the praise, the recurring complaints, the patterns that a star rating alone won't show you.
  • Rating, 26%. The business's aggregate Google star rating.
  • Volume, 20%. How many reviews a business has, log-scaled so that ten reviews don't get treated the same as three hundred, but a contractor with a deep review history isn't unfairly overtaken by one with a handful of five-star ratings.
  • Recency, 10%. How recently customers have left reviews, because a driveway job from six years ago tells you less about a contractor's current crews and current standards than one from last month.
  • Completeness, 16%. Whether the business lists a phone number, a website, working hours and a full address. Basic contact details matter for a trade where you're inviting someone to quote on-site and then dig up your driveway.

Why sentiment carries the most weight

Two paving contractors can sit at the same 4.4-star average and be very different businesses to hire. One might have a wide spread of minor gripes. The other might have five reviews in the last few months all mentioning the same problem: a missed appointment, a resurfacing job that cracked within a season, a quote that changed after the work started. The star average hides that pattern completely. Reading what recent reviews actually describe is the only way to catch it, which is why sentiment is weighted higher than the raw star rating itself.

Why volume and recency matter for this trade

Paving work is expensive and semi-permanent, so a single glowing review doesn't tell you much about consistency. Volume, scaled logarithmically, rewards a track record without letting sheer review count drown out quality. Recency matters separately: a contractor's current team, current subcontractors and current workload all affect the job you'd get today, and recent reviews are a better signal of that than reviews from years back.

Where the score runs low-confidence

Some of the 35 businesses in this guide have very few recent reviews. Where that's the case, we say so directly on the listing: the score is marked low-confidence rather than presented with the same certainty as a business with a long, recent review history. We don't republish review text wholesale. We synthesise themes from what's publicly visible on Google and link back to the source so you can read the original reviews yourself and form your own view.

Scores are earned, not sold

Every score on this site comes from the rubric above and from the data behind it, and nothing else. Paid placement, where it exists on this guide, is always labelled clearly and never changes a business's score or its position. If any list on this site has picks or ordering that were editor-reviewed rather than purely score-driven, that's disclosed on the page itself, including on our best driveway paving contractors list.

Who's behind this guide

The Cheltenham Paving Contractor Guide is published by Meridian Guides, an independent publisher of city directories for everyday services across Malaysia, in operation since 2025. Every Meridian Guides site ranks local businesses using a published scoring method built on public customer reviews, and rankings are never sold. Sponsored placements are always labelled, and no payment ever changes a score. You can read more about the wider publisher at meridianguides.my or reach the team directly at hello@meridianguides.my.

Editorial oversight of this guide sits with Janice, Editor, who maintains the rankings and the listings behind them. Listings across Meridian Guides sites are re-checked on a monthly cycle, and the data behind this guide is refreshed on that same schedule. Where you see a "last verified" stamp on an individual listing, that reflects this active maintenance rather than a one-off snapshot taken when the business was first added.

FAQ

How is the overall score out of 100 calculated?
It's a weighted blend of five signals: sentiment (28%), rating (26%), volume (20%), recency (10%) and completeness (16%). Sentiment and rating draw on Google review data, volume is log-scaled to stop sheer review count dominating, recency checks how current the reviews are, and completeness checks whether basic contact details like phone, website, hours and address are listed.
Why does sentiment matter more than the star rating?
Two contractors can share the same star average while one has repeated recent complaints about a specific issue, like missed appointments or work that didn't hold up. The average alone won't show you that. Reading what recent reviews actually say catches patterns a number can't.
What does it mean if a listing is marked low-confidence?
It means the business has few recent reviews, so there isn't enough data for the score to be reliable in the same way as a business with a longer, more recent review history. We label these clearly rather than presenting them as equally certain.
Does paying for a placement improve a business's score?
No. Paid placements, where they exist, are always labelled and never affect the score or the ranking. Scores come only from the rubric applied to public review data and listing completeness.
How often is the data updated?
The guide is refreshed monthly. Individual listings carry a 'last verified' stamp showing when they were last checked, which reflects the ongoing monthly maintenance rather than a single initial review.
