What is a whacker plate (plate compactor)?

A whacker plate, also called a plate compactor, is a petrol or electric-powered machine that vibrates rapidly to compress loose materials underfoot. The operator guides the flat metal plate across the work surface, where the vibration settles and densifies whatever lies beneath, whether that's soil, sand, gravel, or freshly laid paving blocks.

In block paving work, whacker plates are essential for several stages. They compact the sub-base layer to create a stable foundation, they firm up the sand bed that blocks sit on, and they settle the blocks themselves into position after laying. Proper compaction prevents later subsidence, which would cause uneven surfaces and water pooling. Without this step, a paved drive or patio will deteriorate quickly.

Most whacker plates weigh between 50 and 100 kilograms and move across a surface in a controlled walk, covering ground methodically. Operators feel the machine jump with each vibration cycle, which is why the tool earned the colloquial name "whacker." The depth of compaction depends on the machine's power, plate size, and the number of passes made over the same area.
