What is Indian sandstone?

Indian sandstone is a quarried and naturally riven paving material imported for use in residential and commercial patios across the UK. The stone is extracted from quarries in India, then split by hand along natural grain lines to create individual paving units. This method of splitting produces the characteristic riven (roughly textured) surface finish that distinguishes it from sawn or honed alternatives.

The appeal of Indian sandstone lies in several practical qualities. The material typically displays warm earth tones ranging from buff and golden yellows to reds, browns, and subtle greens, with natural colour variation across individual paving units. This variation gives patios visual interest and a less uniform appearance than manufactured alternatives. Crucially, Indian sandstone is supplied in calibrated thickness, meaning paving units are graded to consistent depths (usually 18-22mm), which simplifies installation and reduces the need for thick mortar beds.

The stone is naturally porous and can be affected by frost, which is why many installers apply sealers in colder climates. Its rustic texture can make it slip-prone when wet, particularly in shaded areas or in the UK's damp seasons. Patio paving contractors favour Indian sandstone for its durability, the character it brings to outdoor spaces, and its relative cost-effectiveness compared to premium alternatives such as limestone or granite.
